Engagement Photography Session in Makena, Maui
C + R got engaged in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. They shared with me that their proposal happened in their apartment, where they spent much of their time throughout the early days of the pandemic. I love that it was a simple, no-fuss affair that seems to suit this sweet, down-to-earth couple! C + R are planning two weddings— one first in California in March 2022, and then another wedding to follow in Singapore. They were vacationing on Maui in June, and booked an engagement photography session for images to use on their save-the-date cards.
The couple asked me to help them select a beach location with some variety for background in the images. They also wanted an outfit change, which I highly encourage during engagement sessions 😃 Not all beaches on Maui have facilities for restrooms or changing, so that helped me to narrow down the location to one of my favorite spots in Makena, Maui.
We started off the session by capturing some images of C + R exploring the walkway to the beach access.
We headed down to the beach, and explored the long stretch of white sand. This beach has some palm trees and some very unique tropical frees that allow for yet even more variety in the background of photos.
The couple did their outfit change, and then we made our way to the far end of the beach to capture some photos just as the sun was really starting to drop into the horizon. Because of Maui’s proximity to the equator, the “golden hour” is actually less than an hour. So, when the sun starts to drop, I start working quickly to capture that beautiful light.
I have a confession: During sessions, I’ve been known to tell a little white lie 😂 I will often say, “Just one more…Okay, I think that’s it!…Oh, wait! I love the way the light is hitting over here. Just one more!” 😂 That’s what happened with this session. I thought we were done, but then I turned around to put my camera away, and I saw the stunning way that the sun was lighting up the clouds, and I had to capture just one more.
